Below is a list of some frequently asked questions, but please feel free to contact us if you need additional information. We are always pleased to assist you.

What are the side effects of Laser Vision Correction?

These procedures share very safe profiles, but as with any surgical procedures, there are risks and potential side effects which may include:

  • under correction (residual nearsightedness)
  • over correction (induced farsightedness)
  • fluctuation in vision (usually subsides after 1-3 months)
  • possible inability to wear contacts after surgery
  • infection
  • corneal haze after PRK

How long will my procedure take and what is the recovery time?

The entire procedure for PRK or LASIK takes approximately 15 minutes for both eyes, with the actual surgical laser process involving less than a minute. With PRK, improvement can be expected in 3-6 days, with excellent vision obtained in approximately 6-8 weeks. With LASIK, vision is often excellent within 24 hours, with minimal postoperative discomfort. Ninety percent of our LASIK patients return to work or normal activity the day after their procedure.

Can I wear glasses or contact lenses after surgery?

Yes, although there can occasionally be some difficulty fitting contacts after laser vision correction.

Will I ever need glasses after surgery?

Yes, for reading, in later life. PRK and LASIK do not alter the natural aging process and progressive hardening of our lens which is responsible for development of presbyopia and the need for reading glasses.

How much time do I need off of work?

Approximately 1-3 days for PRK. Ninety percent of our LASIK patients return to work the next day.

Will insurance companies pay for refractive surgery?

Some will, but most will not. Contact your insurance company and ask if they cover refractive surgery.

What is an "Enhancement"?

An enhancement is a "touch-up" of your laser result where more laser is added to achieve the best possible vision. This is necessary in less than 10% of our patients, and is usually done between 6 weeks and three months after the original laser procedure.
